In Abeokuta, there’s a place that’s very dear to my heart. We call the place ‘abe igi’, under the shade of tree(s).
The place is in Oke Ilewo, close to Ogun State Property and Investment Corporation, (OPIC). There, we discuss, debate, argue and drink socially.
There is a newspaper distributor close by. Actually, most of us were initially attracted by the generosity of the late owner of the newspaper shop.
We are free to read papers, even foreign magazines for free. We are even given seats in a shaded environment.
Upon wetin!
There have been various testimonies of the jobless (then) getting appointments through the adverts seen in those newspapers.
Located close to a popular fast food restaurant, there are so many mama puts around the place. One fine thing about the place is the camaraderie displayed by those who have some means of sustenance to those who are looking up to God for job opportunities.
Once they are there, they will eat. Either by the grace of those who have or through the understanding of the food sellers. They may even get some drinks. To crown it all, if they’re not the silent type they will get home, either through lifts or monetary help. They might even get financial tips to tide them over the next few days.
The most fascinating thing is that the place is a school. This is because, apart from what has been gleaned from newspapers, members, yes, they are members, enrich each other through personal experience.
In fact, I’m yet to see another place where people display such social consciousness, political savvy and economic awareness. Apart from the fact that some of us have presented ourselves for elective posts, political parties normally come around to feel the pulse of the rest of the people at abegi. I understand that even incumbent governors try to know the feelings of the populace from abegi.
And, I am proud to tell you that each individual is an encyclopedia. However, one must go there with an open mind. If you’re the type that have some fixated ideas which you believe can never be changed, I’m sorry for you. Your beliefs will be torn into shreds in the face of superior knowledge.
People who are quick tempered may not be able to stay there unless they change their habits. It is a place to learn mannerisms.
For me, as well as others, if we don’t go there in a day, it will be as if a trillion dollars is being shared, and we have lost our share.Meanwhile, for those who do not know they think it’s only drinks we go there for.
What a way to unwind in this recessed economy.
