Of apologies! by Adewale Sobowale

I learned a lot in secondary school.

In my first form, my geography teacher was Mr. Ogunrinde. If he caught us disturbing, he would trick us into writing letters of apology. I used the word “trick” because he would have promised us that once we wrote the letters, our sins would be forgiven and we would be asked to go sin no more!

And, foolishly naive as we were, we would be rushing to write those incriminating letters. After writing the letters, the teacher would collect them and announce to us that they would be used as evidence against us.

Knowing we had reached a cul-de-sac from which we couldn’t even wiggle, we would start begging him since we knew our case would go to the principal. We knew if the case got to the principal, we couldn’t escape his KBK Kondo Baba Kumo – the club is the king of cudgels. My principal truly believed in Proverbs 29:15, which reads, “The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child left to himself brings shame to his mother.”

I note the singer who, apart from disturbing the peace of the Abuja Airport, also attempted to be a Superman by attempting to stop the plane from flying has apologised.

However, methinks his apology should have been saved for the courts. Meanwhile, the police and airport authorities should be scolded for allowing him to go without charges. At least, he ought to have been arrested and given bail if he’s bailable.

Stars throughout the globe have been arrested for one infraction or the other. If found guilty, they’ve been jailed.

If we are operating from the level of precedents, that is, what is good for the goose is good for the gander, then he and the crew should be prosecuted. But if we are operating on, all men are equal, but some are more equal than others, it will further confirm our sinking south. It will confirm we are practising a quasi-democracy.

It will show the poor level of our justice system!
