As Gaza faces famine-level hunger, some Torontonians are appealing for donations to help the Palestinians.
CBC reports that in July, 63 children died from malnutrition-related infections, according to the World Health Organisation. Over 180 Palestinians, including at least 94 children, have died from hunger over the last two years, according to Gaza authorities.
The vast majority of the food supplies meant for Gaza on trucks is being blocked by Israeli forces, according to the aid agencies.
A registered social worker, Angelica Rao, said what’s happening in Gaza “haunts my soul.”
Rao, a yoga teacher who created Park Yoga for Palestine. Money from the classes is being put toward the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund, and so far, they’ve raised over $2,000, Rao said. The goal is to raise $r4,000 by the end of the summer. She said, “I’m not going to change the whole world, but I can at least do a little something.”
Only a trickle of food makes its way to Gaza through aid agency trucks and air drops. United Nations agencies are reporting that Gaza is getting near a full-scale famine.
If there is food at Israeli-controlled distribution sites, people risk their lives and limbs to access it, according to Nicole Lessard, the nursing activity manager with Doctors Without Borders in Gaza.
