Thinking Out Loud! – By Olaitan Adesina

Never again will I join in blaming Baba Adan for not taking Nigerians seriously when they say there is hunger in the land.

Barely a week ago, Obi Cubana shut Abuja down for his fiftieth birthday. The party was so big that most people didn’t notice that the birthday of the world’s wealthiest black man happened that same week.

Few days after, the CBEX ponzi scheme operators vanished with a whooping N1.3 trillion of “investors” money. No one has been held responsible, Nigerian youths only went on their usual cruise mode and made jokes about it. Skit-makers even cashed out from the tragedy too. Victims wailed for less than 72 hours before swiftly moving on to the talk-of-the-town wedding of Iyabo Ojo’s daughter in Lagos. These astounding displays of opulence by the youthful and glamorous (sometimes tacky) unelected representatives of Nigerian youths—actors, musicians, entrepreneurs, content creators, influencers etc—tells a completely different story from the tales of woe that we like to regale ourselves with on other days.

How then is anyone supposed to believe when we say the economy is bad and hunger is picking our people off one by one like a sniper on a rooftop?

I’m not beefing the celebrants though. The game is the game. After all, it wasn’t any of them who weaponized poverty in the first instance, and no be them go solve Nigeria problem. Still, can we really blame those who say our poverty rate is exaggerated?
