The schoolkid as an adult! – Adewale Sobowale

As today is Children’s Day in Nigeria, I believe all parents of my age owe our children an immense apology for how the country has, through our omission or commission, fared.

Was it not yesterday that a military ruler, having won a needless war, said money wasn’t the problem of Nigeria?

Was it not yesterday that workers got several salary increases, Adebo, Udoji, et al?

Was it not yesterday another military ruler retired with (no) benefits, civil servants whose employment was supposed to be permanent?

Was it not yesterday that yet another military ruler ordered everyone to the farms while launching Operation Feed the Nation, which conveniently turned out to be a ruse with the same acronym.

Was it not yesterday that a former minister of transport in a civilian regime declared impetuously that Nigerians were yet to start eating from the dustbin?

Was it not yesterday that we allowed a despot to lord it over us?

Was it not yesterday that we allowed a self-styled evil genius to embark on a never-ending return to democracy?

Was it not yesterday that we allowed an illiterate butcher dressed in an army uniform to stamp on our rights and allowed him to commit the greatest crime against democracy and humanity?

Is post-1999 Nigeria better?

What was the rate of exchange in 1960?
