Israel’s government has approved a ceasefire agreement with Hamas on Friday.

France 24 reports that the move has set the stage for the first phase of the deal brokered under US President Donald Trump’s peace initiative.

The initiative is aimed at suspending hostilities in Gaza within 24 hours and securing the release of Israeli hostages within 72 hours.

Israel’s cabinet agreed to the deal about 24 hours after mediators announced an agreement to free Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.

The war has deepened Israel’s international isolation and upended the Middle East, having evolved into a regional conflict that has drawn in Iran, Yemen and Lebanon. It also tested the US-Israeli relationship.

Israelis and Palestinians rejoiced after the deal was announced.

If fully implemented, the accord would bring the two sides closer than any previous effort to halt the war.

However, much could still go wrong. But the announcement of an end to fighting and the return of hostages was greeted with jubilation
