The ex-wife of Amazon Founder Jeff Bezos, MacKenzie Scott’s organization, Yield Giving, has given $2 million to the Normal-based The Immigration Project.
The grant is part of Yield Giving’s Open Call initiative, which aims to award US non-profits that help underserved communities $640 million in grant money. The Immigration Project was just one of the 400 organizations awarded the money
The Executive Director of The Immigration Project, Charlotte Alvarez, said the grant will help her non-profit reduce barriers for immigrants and their families in Central Illinois.
She said, “Together, we’re looking at how we can make sure that everyone is treated with the same amount of dignity and respect, regardless of where they came from and where they are living.”
The organization assists immigrants with legal and social services. Its staff is currently working on 800 legal cases. Alvarez further revealed that some of them take a long time to process, and their funding sources are limited.
The grant is, therefore, a relief!
