So, the southern governors in Nigeria have decided, in their benevolence, to go into agriculture.
At least, that’s what the newly elected chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum, Mr. Dapo Abiodun of Ogun state, said. I hope it wasn’t said out of a bit of satiety from the dinner which would have accompanied their meeting.
I’m a great fan of agriculture since it’s a practical way of solving the problem of hunger, especially in Africa and particularly in Nigeria, where the weather is just okay, and so is the soil.
According to Abiodun, the seventeen governors oversee over eight million hectares of land, yet people complain about hunger.
A governor in the same Ogun state performed wonders in agriculture. One would have thought the governor who reigned after him would have continued with his great legacy. But no, that governor was busy destroying historical buildings, setting up model schools, which no one is using right now, and constructing needless bridges.
I’m therefore daring these governors to walk the talk, If they do it will be a welcome development for the country. Nigeria can feed itself and export the remaining to neighboring countries.
But I doubt if this set of politicians can walk their talk.
