British Prime Minister Keir Starmer held a call Saturday with US President Donald Trump after the president’s remarks about NATO’s role in Afghanistan sparked outrage in the UK.
AA reports that Starmer cited British and American soldiers “who fought side by side in Afghanistan,” according to a statement by the UK premier’s office.
It came after Trump said Thursday that NATO troops stayed “a little off the front lines” during the war in Afghanistan.
The president’s claim has sparked backlash in the UK, with Starmer alling it “insulting and frankly appalling.”
But Trump on Saturday praised the UK soldiers who fought in Afghanistan, calling them “very brave.”
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has also described the US president Trump’s remarks about NATO’s role in Afghanistan “unacceptable.”
She said, “Statements that downplay the contribution of NATO countries in Afghanistan are unacceptable, especially when they come from an allied nation.”
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store said Saturday that US President Donald Trump’s remarks about NATO’s role in Afghanistan are “disrespectful.”
CBC News reports that Canadian veterans slam Trump’s comments about the NATO troops as “awful, ..despicable.”
One of them, Bruce Moncur said, “I didn’t see anyone with the nametag ‘Trump’ – and I can almost guarantee, or I know for a fact his sons were nowhere near the front.”
