A Yoruba proverb says, if a person’s punishment is imminent, wherever they maybe, they will travel to go receive it.
So is it with Brijesh Mishra, a travel agent in Jalandhar, India who travelled all the way to Canada to meet his Waterloo.
CBC News reports that Mishra pleaded guilty to immigration offences including misrepresentation and providing false information.
He was also accurate of duping dozens of prospective international students with fake admission letters for Canadian colleges and universities.
He was arrested in Surrey, B.C. in June 2023. He had entered Canada on a tourist visa which had expired at the time of his arrest.
Mishra was arrested after a Canadian Border Services Agency investigation linked him to dozens of fraudulent acceptance letters for Canadian colleges and universities that were provided to prospective international students from India between 2016 and 2020.
“I’m sorry, I cannot change the past, but I can make sure I do not do it again in the future,” He told the courtroom.
Incidentally, the crown and defence lawyers issued a joint sentencing submission asking for three years in prison, to which the judges agreed was sufficient.
He will spend 19 months in prison because his time in custody since his arrest in 2023 will be counted as time served.
