The Weather Network’s Ontario spring forecast calls for a “sluggish” start to the season this year.
Toronto Today reports that colder than average temperatures and higher rates of precipitation, including more snow, is being forecast by the network for March and April.
The extended period of snow and ice is expressed after Toronto, and much of Canada, experienced a harsh winter caused by La Nina – when strong trade winds bring cold water to the surface in North America, pushing a jet stream forward – and a polar vortex.
Toronto has seen countless days with freezing temperatures and periods of heavy snowfall, including a record-breaking winter storm on January 25, when downtown received an estimated 56 centimetres of snow, beating out the previous single-day record of 48.3 centimetres set on December 11, 1944.
The Weather Network said while periods of mild spring weather can be expected this year, warm weather will not be consistent through March and well into April..
Gardeners could see their preparations for the start of the spring planting season impacted because of the lingering snow and ice, the network said.
Weather in Toronto is expected to fluctuate throughout the remainder of this week.
Environment Canada is calling for a high of -1 C on Thursday with a few flurries. Nighttime temperatures are expected to drop to -5 C with a 30 percent chance of flurries.

Environment Canada is then calling for a high of -5 C on Sunday with a low of -13 C.
