In my secondary school days, I was a major fan of the James Hadley Chase thrillers. What attracted me to the series was the fact that the writer of the series himself was a ‘dribbler’ because you never knew where a particular a story would end until you finished reading it.
One of the series is titled, ‘The Paw in The Bottle’.
It’s about Julie Holland, a good time girl who would stop at nothing to get what she wanted. She was a major participant in a fur robbery. However, at the end of the day, she paid for her sins.
The title itself comes from a particular place, possibly South America, where there are a lot of monkeys. Whenever the people want to catch a monkey, they put peanuts in a bottle with a narrow neck.
Once the monkey comes along, it will dip its hand inside the bottle and grab the peanut. It will then discover it’s impossible for it to remove it’s hand if he doesn’t stop the peanut.
However, because of the monkey’s greed, it will refuse to drop the peanut until it is caught!
Does it make any sense to the Nigerian ruling elite?
