A group of neo-Nazis dressed in black and with their faces covered turned up to a rally organized by pro-refugee groups in Melbourne on Tuesday evening.
ABC News reports police had to use capsicum spray on the group because they disrupted the rally.Police officers attended the rally outside the Department of Home Affairs in Docklands. It was held to mark 100 days of continuous protests calling for asylum seekers to be granted permanent visas.
The neo-Nazi group chanted white supremacist slogans and displayed an offensive banner near the encampment.
Meanwhile, police formed a line to separate the far-right group from groups of about 300 asylum seeker demonstrators and were forced to use capsicum spray.
Premier Jacinta Allan described the actions of the neo-Nazis as unacceptable but said police had the powers to deal with them.
Victoria police said there were no arrests and no reports of injury, and they are reviewing footage of the incident.
The organizer of the asylum seeker rally, Aran Mylvaganam from the Tamil Refugee Council, said it was a distressing scene.
