Nollywood abroad! – Adewale Sobowale

There’s no doubt that Nollywood – Nigeria’s version of Hollywood – is going places. With the number of Nigerians progressively committing the offence of japaing, the sky is the beginning for our thespians.

The movies are doing a lot in reminding one of home.

But there are quite a few things to be done.

For movies that get to Netflix, my suggestions don’t apply. I believe Netflix’s management is adequately handling them.

First is the issue of subtitling. Either we do things right, or we forget them. The entire world is watching movies, so the people in charge need to spend some money on professionals. The matter has gone beyond “I went to school so I can subtitle a movie.”

Second, there is the issue of classification. Some movies are violent, some are erotic, and some are drug-related. I don’t think those are good for kids. It wouldn’t harm if movies could be categorized.

Third is the use of what I consider to be wrong artists. For instance, it is unusual for people in their forties to be playing the roles of “club girls.”

In any case, introducing new acts will give them the much-needed opportunity to showcase their skills.

I love those movies!
