16 Nigerian soldiers have been killed in the oil-rich Delta State state of the country.
The soldiers were murdered last Thursday in the Okuama community of Ughelli South Local Government of the state. They consisted of one Lieteunat-Colonel, two majors, one captain and 12 soldiers.
The Director, Defence Information Brigadier-General Tukur Gusau, said the troops from 181 Amphibious Battalion were deployed into the Bomadi region and were on a peace-keeping mission in the Okuama community when they were murdered on Thursday.
After the murders, there have been reprisal attacks on the community. However, the military has denied conducting a reprisal attack, while the community leaders are saying the military did.
Meanwhile, about 20 suspects of the killings have been arrested.
