Nation of Ingrates! – Adewale Sobowale

The Yoruba will say, ‘Isu eni lo ntowo eni b’epo’. They will again say, ‘Eru kan lo nmu ni bu’gba eru’.

Both of these sayings are, in this case, basically about gratitude. But we’ll return to that in a mo!

It’s no more news that the dreaded coronavirus is now in Nigeria. Given the fact that Nigerians are found everywhere, it’s a wonder that the virus just sneaked into the country.

Anyway, all hands should be on deck to curb the spread of the virus by improving on our deplorable health facilities. But then, our personal hygiene could do with some improvement.

Now back to the main fulcrum of my post. Our government has made us a nation of ingrates.

I really don’t know the use of the sentence, ‘The labour of our heroes past shall never be in vain.’ It’s part of our national anthem.

Dr Ameyo Adadevoh who died on the 19th of August 2014 could still have been alive today if she had minded her own business.

But then, against threats by the Liberian government, she placed Patrick Sawyer – a Liberian- who was afflicted by the deadly Ebola virus in quarantine.

Alas, she was also infected with the virus which eventually killed her.

Earlier in 2012, she was the first to alert the Nigerian ministry of health of swine flu when H1N1 spread to Nigeria.

Posthumously, so many organizations honored her for her good works. Hers was a unique case of people dying for what they believed in.

Her defense of her stance in the case of Sawyer was, ‘For the greater public good.’

But what did the Government do in her honor?

Which health practitioner will be encouraged by the government’s treatment of the Adadevoh issue?
