Na wah o! – Adewale Sobowale

Abeokuta is an interesting place to live in. Almost everyone knows whom you are. If not directly, then by extension.

But for me, I find life in Abeokuta somewhat on the dull side. People generally do not wake up until around six o’Clock in the morning. OK, people hardly get to the bus stops until six.

I have noticed all the roads leading to Abeokuta. The first being the Osodi – Sango road. The second is the Osodi – Ibadan express road. Third is the Abeokuta – Odeda – Ibadan road. The fourth is the Abeokuta – Ayetoro road. The fifth is the Abeokuta – Oke Ata road linking the Sokoto express way.

There could be some other ones. But those are the major ones I know.

Out of the five roads, only the one linking the express way from the Sagamu junction could be said to be in a good shape.

Agreed that the major policy of this regime is to fix the urban roads. Although I object to any policy of government that concentrates on one area to the detriment of other areas. At least, that’s what we are witnessing to a large extent in Ogun State.

I understand the roads being given facelifts are for foreign investors. They must not drive on rough roads. That’s OK!

However, the Yoruba will say ‘Iyanrin la ma te ka to kan omi,’ if you are going to the river. It means, if the roads to Abeokuta are not given facelifts, we may be, ‘Waiting for Godot’, with apologies to Samuel Beckett.

I mean, if they can not go through passable access roads, even if we make Abeokuta the eighth wonder of the world in terms of road network. It will amount to nought!

By the way, before anybody comes to say some roads are trunk A roads, I have a great piece of information for them.

Lagos State just completed the construction of a terribly needed bridge at Ile Epo area on the same Osodi – Sango – Abeokuta road. I know the Federal Government has a way of reimbursing the states for construction of trunk A roads. Ogun state government actually benefited not long ago.

So, over to the powers that be!
