Migrants alone cannot solve labour shortages: minister

Taiwan’s Minister of Labour Hung Sun-han has called on industries to consider seniors and hire young people part-time.

Taipei Times reports that Hung said this in an exclusive interview with the Central News Agency.

He said labour shortage issues need to be solved one step at a time.

The Ministry knows industries are calling for migrant workers. and is happy to conduct reviews of the conditions of different countries, he said.

He stated that there are two important prerequisites for introducing transnational labour.

First, domestic workers’ employment opportunities and rights must be given priority. He added that introducing transnational labour should not cause wages to remain stagnant or decline.

He also said it is important to protect migrant workers’ employment safety and labour rights, as they are statistically more likely to experience workplace accidents.
