I was just thinking of the changing world. Yes, vis a vis our environment.
Not too long ago, in the days of my youth, one could see a lot of greenery even in urban centers like Lagos.
But what do we have now?
There used to be a Biney Zoo just across the railway line in Yaba. Apart from the fact that the zoo was a relaxation center, it was a place where one could commune with nature.
Not quite long ago, in the days of our fathers, you could not go to the Lagos Marina without marvelling at the touch of green. In fact, people used to go to the marina for fresh air.
There used to be a time when, as kids, we would play with our paper boats in the clean gutters of Ebute Meta.
Why?
The gutters were clean.
The whole place is rotten now.
Why is it that we don’t feel the harmattan in our urban areas again?
We used to have a clean estate in Lawanson, same for Akerele in Lagos. Everything has turned into a rough city now.
Why is it that some flora and fauna are going extinct? And we are not thinking of replacing them.
My opinion is that we are harming ourselves due to our thoughtlessness. Indeed, we are in the process of committing a mass suicide, even if serially.
Ok, we are looking for money at the expense of our health and good living.
I know the present weather condition is more or less a universal one. But what are we doing to help the situation? By helping the situation we are helping ourselves. Must we wait for nature to correct itself? Let’s assume it doesn’t. Does it mean we are done for? We certainly hardly love our own selves.
I know it’s a rat race out there. But the solution is so simple.
Plant a tree today!!!
