Marathonic Week! – Adewale Sobowale

Naija no dey carry last…

For Nigerians, last week was one of the most marathonic.

The week started with the ban on okadas and tricycles in the country’s commercial capital, Lagos. Many husbands used that as an excuse to get home late. I can imagine they had a ready and valid excuse.

‘I had to trek.’

People don’t really need to ask where I stand on the Okada issue. As much as Okadas constitute a nuisance on the roads, if government fails to introduce palliative measures to ease people’s transportation to and fro their various destinations, I still insist the government is wrong.

Even the okada operators need to be absorbed one way or the other. If they are not, we shouldn’t look far when crimes which are already at an intolerable level get even worse.

Last Saturday too, the Lagos Marathon took place. I’m told Kenyans dominated the prime places. Granted that Nigerians were never known to specialize in distance races, what’s the level of sports development in the country?

A country which produced an Emmanuel Ifeajuna who happened to be the first Black African to win a Commonwealth gold medal at the 1954 games. A nation that produced a Modupe Osikoya, a track star who won a total of five gold medals at the 1973 and 1978 All Africa Games.

Those are just two of those who made Nigeria proud in its hey days.

Ok, maybe the ban on okada will give us champions in walking!

The week ended on a sorry note. Although it took place in December, the story of the knight who marathoned to death while ‘in action’ got viral this weekend. For those who have been posting and spreading stories, I will give a Yoruba saying,
A ri teni moo wi, a f’apadi bo tie mole.
Gossips always tend to cover up their own misdeeds.

What are we doing as a government to prevent people who might want to commit harakiri? I mean is it possible to purchase sex enhancers over the counter? If it’s possible, in what quantity?

Methinks the regulatory authorities should do something about the purchase of drugs over the counter!
