Libya and Tunisia have urged European countries to increase their assistance to enable them to tackle the migration crisis effectively.

They said this when representatives from 28 African and European countries met in Tripoli to discuss ways to address irregular migration.

in his opening address at the Trans-Mediterranean Forum, the Prime Minister of Libya, Abdul Hamid Dbeibah said countries “have a moral responsibility” towards the people “who cross the desert and the sea” hoping to reach Europe.

Libya is a main departure point for refugees and migrants, mostly from sub-Saharan African countries, risking the perilous waters to seek better lives in Europe. The United Nations has registered over 20,000 deaths and disappearances in the central Mediterranean since 2014.
