More than 3,500 Chinese nationals were found crossing the southern border irregularly in May. Hundreds of Jordanian, Turkish and Mauritanian nationals were also found crossing the border, according to Customs and Border Protection (CBP) sources.

The vast majority—about 98%—were encountered in the San Diego Sector, which has emerged as a top border-crossing point. However, the number of people crossing the border has decreased recently.

The Tucson Sector in Arizona saw the most irregular encounters, with over 33,000. San Diego was a close second, with over 32,000. The San Dego sector recorded over 770 Jordanians, more than 670 Turkish, and over 500 Mauritanian nationals recorded crossing the crossing irregularly in May.

The influx of Jordanian nationals was put in the spotlight last month when two people from Jordan were arrested for attempting to breach Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia. One of them had crossed into the US irregularly and had then been released to the interior of the US.

The number of Chinese nationals has greatly increased since 2021.

The ongoing crisis in the border threatens to be a major issue for President Biden’s election campaign.
