Italy’s left-wing democratic Party wants the government to grant citizenship to more than 560,000 migrant children.
Remix reports that the proposal would see any foreign national who has schooled in Italy for at least five years and is over ten would be automatically eligible for citizenship. It would affect about 60 per cent of the current immigrant student population.
However, the Deputy Prime Minister, Matteo Salvini, has repeatedly rejected the proposal, while left-wing lawmakers are expected to table an opposition bill in parliament next month.
Over 80 per cent of migrant students who would be eligible for citizenship under the plan live in the northern regions of the country, while fewer than 15 per cent live in the south.
If the plan is successful, more than 300,000 pupils could benefit from the law in the first year, with a further 260,000 students doing so over the next four years.
