The UN’s human rights office has condemned a targeted Israeli attack that killed six journalists in Gaza. It called it a breach of international law.
BBC reports that five Al Jazeera journalists were killed in an Israeli air strike on Sunday.
Two others were killed, including a freelance journalist. Israel’s military said it targeted Anas-al-Sharif, alleging that he had “served as the head of a terrorist cell in Hamas.” Sharif denied this when he was alive.
Media rights groups and countries, including Qatar, condemned the attack.UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s spokesman said the UK government was “gravely concerned” and called for an independent investigation.Sharfi, Mohammed Qreiqeh, Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal, and Moamen Aliwa of Al Jazeera were killed during the attack.
They were buried on Monday. Mohammed al-Khaldi was the sixth journalist killed. Yet another person was also killed in the attack. Reporters Without Borders, The Foreign Press Association, and The Committee to Protect Journalists all condemned the killings.
