There’s no doubt about the fact that Israel is the superior power in the war against Palestinians. The evidence could be seen vividly in the suffering of Palestinians who live in hunger, instability, fears of being wounded or killed, and so on.
However, it could be a no-win situation fir the leaders of both Israel and Hamas as the world’s top war crimes court is their arrest.
AP reports that the leaders include israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu his defence minister, Yoav Gallant and three Hamas leaders – Yahya Sinwar, Muhammad Deif and Ismail Haniyen – have been accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip and Israel by the court’s prosecutor, Karim Khan.
While Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders have condemned the move and described it as anti-semitic, President Joe Bisen of the United States has also lambasted the prosecutor and supported Israel’s right to defend itself against Hamas.
A panel of three judges will decide whether to issue the warrants and allow a case to proceed.
Although Israel is not a member of the court and the arrest warrants may be of little value as far as prosecuting Netanyahu and Gallant is concerned, the threat of arrest might make it difficult for them to travel abroad.
Meanwhile, Netanyahu has come under heavy pressure at home to end the war. Thousands of Israelis have joined weekly demonstrations asking the government to reach a deal to bring home the hostages. Two members of the Israeli cabinet, Gallant and Benny Guantz have also threatened to resign if Netanyahu fails to make known a postwar vision for Gaza.
