An Israeli air strike on Gaza City has killed about one hundred Palestinians.
The Israeli military said it targeted a Hamas command and control centre where militants were planning attacks.
Al Taba’een school was hit during dawn prayers, according to eyewitnesses. The death toll may make it one of the deadliest Israeli attacks since the start of the Gaza war. Emergency personnel in Gaza worked to locate and evacuate the injured from the rubble.
A surgeon at the Al-Ahli hospital, Taisir al-Tanna, where many of the victims were taken, said, “There are lots of serious injuries. This has been a very bloody day.”
He said he had carried out many amputations, including operating on at least four children.
The Israeli military confirmed the attack on the school. It said, “Numerous steps were taken to mitigate the risk of harming civilians, including the use of precise munitions, aerial surveillance, and intelligence information.”
A spokesperson for the US National Security Council said, “We know Hamas has been using schools as locations to gather and operate out of, but we have also said repeatedly and consistently that Israel must take measures to minimize civilian harm. This underscores the urgency of a ceasefire and hostage deal, which we continue to work tirelessly to achieve.”
