Now, let’s look at the cattle-rearing issue from another angle. I know we should continue constructive debates until we find a solution to the matter.
Some people have argued eloquently that since the cattle trade is a private one, the businessmen trading in cattle should buy ranches for their cattle. Of course, this will go a long way in saving lives and property. We will also have a cleaner environment because there will be less environmental pollution.
However, the people in the business have also eloquently defended themselves by saying their kind of cattle will not thrive well on ranches. They are the nomadic type.
Well, in the first instance, since cattle are reared to be sold for slaughter, I believe the people in the business should gradually sell off the stock they have now. It’s only sensible for them to start investing in cows that can be ranched.
The main point of this piece is that we should change our traditional views. For instance, why don’t we think of keeping the cattle in the north? Ranches should be provided for cattle. There’s no gain in saying the fact that there will be more beef quality if the animals are kept in one place. If we do this, the cattle will be slaughtered there, the carcass will then be transported to the south.
For those who want to celebrate whatever, let’s shift our emphasis away from buying live animals. They should just order beef in kilos.
If we agree to this, it will create a lot of jobs in the north. Butchers and transporters will get more than enough jobs. However, electric power supply must be a given. A fact is that if beef is to be preserved in a way that will be fit for human consumption, the electric supply must be OK.
Of course, butchers in the south will still retain their businesses.
So, it’s a win-win situation!
