I Covered My Face In Shame – Dollin Holt

Beside me, on a bus journey recently, was a young lady on the precious side of mid 20s.

She spoke low into her mobile phone as the bus whizzed past a Bus Stop in a green manicured surroundings that was her destination.

Eavesdroping, I overheard the angry voice of a lady at the other end of the line, defending allegations made against her.

It was her grandmother, swearing and cussing:

‘It is my life, I will do what I like with it, f..k who I want to f..k’.

The young lady, with a sudden rush of adrenaline to the head became implacable. She countered sharply:

‘You old fool, you are supposed to be my grandmother. Take your eyes and filthy hands away from my boyfriend’. Wait until I catch you.

The whole thing erupted into a vicious paroxsm of words. An internecine verbal warfare, if you like.

I covered my face in shame, pondering what has become of this world.

In a previous world, a grandmother was god-like and revered.

A grandmother conducted herself with moral rectitude.

A grandmother and granddaughter were bound by love, maternal affection and allegiance.

What is happening? A post modern neurosis?
