Haiti’s interim Prime Minister, Garry Conile, has formed a new cabinet, replacing all the members of former Prime Minister Ariel Henry’s cabinet.

Meanwhile, the country is making efforts to tackle economic woes and gang violence.

The announcement came a fortnight after the council appointed Garry Conille as interim prime minister. Mr Conille was a regional director for the United Nations Children’s Fund.

The newly-appointed ministers are not limited to Haiti’s political class.

Domonique Dupuy will serve as the country’s foreign minister, and he used to be the country’s representative at the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. The prime minister will also serve as interior minister, a position that also oversees the Police.

In the last three years, armed groups have launched organized attacks on the country, blocked fuel terminals, and raided police stations. The disturbances have been compounded by a series of crises facing the country.

These are periodic natural disasters, food insecurity, and long-standing political instability, including the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in 2021. After Moise was killed, Henry, the then-prime minister, became the country’s de facto leader.

However, Henry faced questions over the legitimacy of his leadership when he indefinitely postponed the presidential and legislative elections.

Gang leaders and civil society groups demanded Henry’s removal. He stepped down in April, setting the stage fora transitional presidential council to take over the government
