Antonio Guterres, the United Nations Secretary-General, has expressed concern over the escalating war of words and deadly border clashes between Israel’s military and Lebanon’s Hezbollah fighters.

According to him, a miscalculation will only trigger the already tense situation, and the effects will be felt even across the border.

He said, “Let’s be clear: The people of the region and the people of the world cannot afford Lebanon to become another Gaza.” UN peacekeepers were working to calm the situation and prevent “miscalculation” after both sides heightened their rhetoric, raising the possibility of full-scale conflict.

UNIFIL, a UN peacekeeping organization and unharmed technical observers known as UNTSO have long been stationed in southern Lebanon to monitor hostilities around the demarcation line between both countries known as the Blue Line.

Hezbollah has fired rockets and drones into Israel.
