That the federal government of Nigeria led by Mr Mohammed Buhari is giving away some Abaçha loot is a done deal. The government will be giving away the money to poor households in nineteen states anytime from now.
I thought I heard someone reporting that Mr Buhari said that Abacha was not corrupt. Then apparently, Abacha must have kept the money in a foreign account for times like these.
Anyway, let’s thank God for little mercies. When the money is given out, each household would receive a princely sum of five thousand naira or thereabouts.
That’s a damn lot of money, ain’t it?
Let’s take an average household of four. How much will it pay for house rent, feeding, clothing, and so on.
And by the way, the money was stolen from somewhere, j believe the proper thing to have done in the first instance would have been to return the the money to where it was stolen from. Ok, maybe it would be a way of accepting that Abacha was corrupt.
In any case, while we are at it, there should be equity. At least, there is order even amongst thieves.
We should remember all those who were alive during the Abacha era. Especially those who were killed by hunger. Their dependants should be given pride of place in the five thousand naira rush.
