There was an explosion and assault at the headquarters of the Turkish national aerospace company on Wednesday.

The country’s interior minister, Ali Yerlikaya, has termed the large blast, which happened outside the building at 4 pm, a “terror attack.”

Turkey’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said, “I condemn this heinous attack and wish mercy on our martyrs.”

Yerlikaya said, “Sadly, we have five martyrs and 22 wounded in the attack. Three injured people were already discharged, 19 still under treatment.”

He said two attackers had been “neutralized” and work was under way to determine their identities. But he did not say whether any other attackers were still at large. There were conflicting reports of whether the situation was still ongoing.

It was not clear who was behind the attack. But the defence minister pointed an accusing finger at the militant Kurdistan Workers’ party, or PKK, without giving evidence.

Turkish warplanes launched airstrikes on PKK positions across Northern Iraq and Syria late Wednesday.
