Ex-coup leader wants to be president in Haiti!

A former coup leader in Haiti has demanded the prime minister’s resignation. Reuters reports that Guy Philippe has said he wants to become president.

Haiti has come to the brink of collapse due to several months of violence. Powerful gangs, which are increasing day by day, are also asking for the resignation of Mr Ariel Henry, the prime minister.

Meanwhile, Mr Henry is away from the country and seems unwilling to return.

Philippe, who is a former police officer, is demanding the resignation of the prime minister, saying he should stay where he is now and allow Haitians to decide their fate.

Meanwhile, the government has extended a state of emergency around the capital, Port-au-Prince, while the violence has forced thousands to flee their homes. The main airport is also to close.

The healthcare system is near collapse, children are unable to attend school, and thousands have been killed, kidnapped or driven from their homes. There are widespread reports of rape and torture by the gangs.
