Cinema Du Musee was bustling on Tuesday night as everyone gathered for a special Montreal premiere screening of the third season of “Citizen Minutes”, a short documentary collection featuring six films, all exploring a common theme: sharing the stories of everyday Canadians driving real change across the country through civic engagements.
“The Citizen Minutes project is born out of the belief that documentary films can be very powerful tools for social change. They’re wonderful tools to open people’s minds, touch people’s hearts, and bring the community together to have tough conversations,” said Jackie Garrow, the director of philanthropy and impact with Hot Docs.
Many key themes were featured in the night’s screening of the serie, ranging from indigenous education and LGBTQ25+ representation – all told through the voice of real people going about their daily lives but making a difference in their communities.
“We didn’t want to focus on people that are in office and that are prime ministers and leading huge organizations,” Garrow began to explain.
“We wanted to really situate these stories and inspire people to see themselves as change makers.whether they’re a school teacher or a softball coach or a rap artist – you can make change creatively.”
