Dirty World! – Adewale Sobowale

There’s no doubt that recent events have proved that our world is dirty.

Yeah! As dirty as we have made it!!

That’s what informed my post about wearing masks yesterday. I just felt we shouldn’t leave leprosy and be expending all energies on mere ringworm.

Indeed, I still strongly feel we should emphasize personal and community hygiene. In those days, we used to study Hygiene as a subject in elementary schools and Health Science as a subject in secondary schools.

At the community level, even before the advent of the Europeans, I can boldly say that Yoruba placed a high premium on community health.

When the Europeans came, they introduced the Health Inspectorate system, popularly known as ‘wole wole’.

True, the colonists did us a lot of disservice. But they also did some positive things. We had a public water system, public toilets, dog sections, parks, and even botanical gardens, among other things.

I need to be educated about the survival of all these facilities.

The living conditions we subject ourselves to are certainly not good enough for homo sapiens. Even birds in pens live better lives than some humans.

Like a musician once sang, it’s like our world is getting old. But since we’ve refused to leave and since it’s not yet Armageddon, we just must make the world a better place for generations yet unborn.

We could start by getting rid of used face masks and gloves which are becoming environmental problems!
