Dancing Naked! – Adewale Sobowale

The recent revelations of data harvesting by Cambridge Analytica have shown that, against all odds, Facebook is not a safe place.

I an saying this because of people who place certain restrictions on people, their own people, getting to know some information which they consider vital. There are some who even make their friends inaccessible to others.

That’s fine, ain’t it?

Except for the fact that Zucky Boy and his team are like father confessors of Facebook. They hear everything and do see everything.

In our innocence, we believe our vital information is safe. But to our chagrin, it has been discovered that we’re building our castles in the air.

The information is not so safe. At least, Cambridge Analytica has proved it.

What is of grave concern to me is the fact that when Zuckerberg appeared before the American congress last week, he admitted responsibility for the gaffe and he apologised promising that such will never happen again.

Just like that!

For a die hard user of Facebook, they wouldn’t have found it funny. We know the sanctions Facebook usually places on people who had breached some of their own regulations.

Cambridge Analytica itself was not even brought into the matter.

That the Facebook chief executive appeared before the American congress itself shows that Facebook is essentially an American company.

But the major lesson to be learnt from the incident is that we should keep our own secrets secret. By the way, I’m sure people are aware that very soon, to get an American visa, one must present their social media details.

Secrets remain secrets when they are not divulged!
