Prior to and during the first Republic in Nigeria, the political players had to prove that they could rule us better than than the colonialists. That’s why we had a healthy competition among the then three regions.
At least, I know of Western region where the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo performed wonders.
I’m, of course, not saying there were no Judases amidst the rulers. But then, to a great extent, the corruption of those days was surreptitious.
Our people, generally, wouldn’t have approved of such.
Then, it was more of CCM – chop and clean mouth!
But then, as time went on, we passed through our age of innocence. Quite unfortunate for the Nigerian society, we started losing our values and mores.
The Yoruba believe if a person is not a dry cleaner and he keeps bringing clothes to the house, he is most likely to be a thief.
Now, we hardly bother. As long as someone has money, we don’t care about their antecedents. Especially, if the person is generous.
Why won’t they be generous? They are spending crumbs from the commonwealth, which they’ve hijacked, on the people. Unfortunately, most people have been reduced to living in a fool’s paradise.
This is the era of BJBDN – Bu je bu danu!
Isn’t it an irony that a land so blessed with everything has its people suffering? Isn’t it another irony that the people are praising their tormentors?
