When I was in school, and we wanted to demonstrate over whatever, if I mistakenly told elders in my family, they wouldn’t ask me not to participate. Instead, they would counsel me against being in the front or at the back. Indeed, they would tell me to be in the middle of protesting students.
But then, from my experience, even those who were not participating could have been at greater risk. That’s because they might be hit by stray bullets. Since they were not at the scene of action, they might not be able to run for safety.
The youth in Nigeria aren’t listening to any counseling from elderly people again. That’s because THEY are the ones feeling the pinch.
I daresay it won’t be too much for the elderly to support them discreetly if they can do so openly. But I tend to think open support of the aspirations and yearnings of our youth will be most appreciated.
After all, the youth are on the right track in fighting for a better future.
