I must state that I supported a candidate I felt would have been more empathetic to the ordinary person’s agony in Nigeria’s last presidential election.
However, as the candidate was “said” to have lost, I have no choice but to accept the incumbent!
But then, how has he fared?
Let’s use the hunger protest some youths have scheduled for August 1 to 10 as an example.
Instead of calling adults, be they traditional rulers, be they the military, be they the police or even religious leaders, I would have expected the president to actually set in motion all those things that will alleviate hunger, poverty, joblessness, insecurity, etc. in place.
Did you know that he could have improved things with a pen stroke and made the country more livable?
I know this, and the youths realize he didn’t start bad governance in Nigeria. I suppose that’s why the protest is tagged #endbadgovernance and not #Endtinubu’s government.
I just felt that if the armed forces could eradicate the threat of Boko Haram gangsters, thereby making the farms safe, farmers would return to the farms. But no, the armed forces are busy with a protest that might not even occur.
The president may need to be made aware of the power of his pen. Let him act and spend less time in meetings with people who might not be facing hunger, poverty, joblessness, etc., in the land.
It would have been better for him and members of his cabinet to meet the youth across the nation instead of staying in the presidential palace.
It would also be better if he decided to act on what the masses are yearning for.
Is it conceivable that Nigeria is now an importer of maize? Nigerians can no longer afford to eat three square meals daily. Of course, jobs are now for Nigeria’s “chosen” few.
The announcement of the so-called Oro festival in Lagos, conveniently between August 1 and 15, seems like a sillily act to court favours. Incidentally, it brings us to the question of whether Nigeria would be a modern state or not.
A modern state would recognize multiculturalism while also recognising the rights of the Indigenous people. For all I care, the oro and other festivals which debar freedom of movement should be held in private enclosures.
