Alli + 40 Thieves – Adewale Sobowale

Personally, I think the illegal killing of any Nigerian is a slap on the face of all Nigerians. In fact, it is a sad show of what could befall ANY Nigerian at any point in time. It is even sadder that a government agency had to supervise the murder of Nigerians.

I’m referring to the killing of so called smugglers in Ogun state by some trigger happy buffoons in Customs uniform. (Please, excuse my use of language) May I ask the Customs administration if those guys have been pinpointed. May I ask the Police if they had done anything worthwhile on the matter?

I’ve always said that the life of an average Nigerian is less worthy than the life of a chicken. At least, the chicken gets taken care of until the owner decides to kill it for food.

Were those people killed carrying arms? Were they threatening the lives of the Customs officers with the arms? Assuming the so called smugglers were armed, was it impossible for the officers to disarm them? Could it have been a case of failure of negotiations for settlement?

We will keep on asking so many questions.

Why did the Customs officers abandon their Quarry Road offices when a crowd besieged the place. They ought to have waited to, at least, explain why those people were killed.

Oju ni malu nro, obe o da lorun!

The Customs even go like thieves in the night to break into so called smugglers’ shops. Since the shop owners themselves were not there, how are we sure the goods were not brought in by the Customs men. Couldn’t the search be done in the day?

I recognize the fact that Nigeria has a large expanse of land border. If it is generally unmanned and unfenced, I don’t believe it’s the common man’s problem. I’m suggesting that the Customs should not have any say over whatever food item has found its way into this country.

At least, not in these hard times.

A word, they say……..
