Shallie Abbiusi, a human rights activist and journalist, has sued the Ghanaian government at the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Court of Justice.
GhanaWeb reports that the lawyer is suing the government for unlawful arrest, detention and deportation by the Ghana Immigration Service.
Abbiusi is the former spokesperson for the New Force Movement of Ghana. The action filed by her lawyers, led by Francis Xavier Susu, demands $1 million.
Last December, the Immigration Service arrested her for “obtaining for yourself a student permit by false declaration contrary to section 52 (1) (i) of the Immigration Act 2000 (Act 573).”
However, the charge was later dropped, and she was deported. However, she felt her rights had been infringed upon, so she instructed her lawyer to sue the state and demand compensation.
