One of the widow’s of the late MKO Abiola, Modupe Onitiri-Abiola declared a secession of the Yoruba of South Western Nigeria from Nigeria over the weekend.
Abiola was the winner of the June 12, 1993 election in Nigeria. However, the military regime annulled the election. Abiola later died in prison on July 7, 1998 after he had refused to denounce his mandate.
On Friday Onitiri-Abiola declared a succession from the Nigerian federation. She also declared herself the president of the Yoruba Republic.
No fewer than 18 suspects of the Yoruba nation were arrested after attempting to seize the Oyo House of Assembly. The men were not only masked, they were dressed in military camouflage and armed. They went on to occupy strategic spots in the secretariat.
However, they met their match in the state’s security apparatus and some of them were arrested. Before their arrest, they were bent on hoisting their flag in the secretariat.

Adewale Osifeso, the State Police Public relations Officer has said that at least 18 suspects have been arrested in connection with the attack on the secretariat.
Meanwhile the Commissioner of Police has delegated a team led by the Deputy Commissioner of :Police in charge of the state Criminal Investigation Department to investigate the incident.
