At least 84,542 children of labour migrants were detected in Kyrgyzstan during household visits in the first quarter of 2024, the Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Migration has reported.

24KG reports that about 42,648 of them live with relatives without guardianship registration. De jure, relatives are not responsible for the future lives of children, the ministry reminds.

There are cases when children of labour migrants experience psychological and emotional difficulties due to a lack of parental love and care, even when they are in a family environment. Some children of labour migrants do not attend school and medical institutions and fail to receive state-guaranteed services. Sometimes, such children may need [psychological support and assistance.

After a comprehensive assessment of the situation of the child and family in difficult living conditions, social security employees develop and approve a plan for individual work with them and the protection of the child.

The ministry clarified that it had previously initiated a draft regulatory legal act on the notification of social workers by labour migrants about a child temporarily deprived of parental care. However, it could not be submitted for public discussion for several reasons.

But the work will continue. For example, the ministry is assisting in initiating the introduction of the concept of children of labour migrants into the Children’s Code.
