Around 3,000 migrants from Mexico have set out on foot to the US border.

The Daily Mail reports that the migrants are from about a dozen countries. Some of them said they hoped to reach the US before the November elections.

According to them, they fear that if Donald Trump wins, he will follow through on a promise to close the border to asylum-seekers.

Miguel Salazar, a migrant from El Salvador, said, “We are running the risk that permits might be blocked.”

The group left Ciudad Hidalgo, which is next to a river that marks Mexico’s border with Guatemala. Some migrants said they had been waiting in the town for weeks for permits to travel to cities further north.

In recent years, migrants passing through Mexico have been organizing large groups to reduce the risk of being attacked by gangs or stopped by Mexican Immigration officials while travelling. However, the caravans tend to break up in southern Mexico as people get weary of walking hundreds of miles.
