2 Wrongs = Right! – Adewale Sobowale

There’s this trouble that’s always brewing up between some Igbo and Yoruba people. You know when people are well fed they will be looking for bekun bekun!

The Lagosians’ accusation is that the Igbo do not respect them to the extent that they are calling Lagos a no man’s land.

Apart from that, they are accusing the Igbo of going the ‘other’ way politically. The ruling party is the party favoured by these Lagosians. They magisterially believe everything they own must be in that party.

Those living in their own houses are part of what they own. Those who buy land from them to erect their own structures too are not left out.

The Igbo are traditionally Republican. They do their own will. Getting them to obey the orders is an impossible task.

Some Yoruba even say outsiders are not allowed to own properties in Igboland. Nigerians from other ethnic groups are not allowed into Igbo civil service.

Even the Oba of Lagos promised to throw them into the ocean sometime ago.

Are the Igbo constitutionally protected in their living in Lagos? If they are, then are those that are against their stay not going against the constitution?

Again, are the Igbo making any impact on the economy of Lagos. If they are, why are we treating them roughly?

I should even ask if a tenant is not allowed freedom of association which leads to the freedom to belong to any party of their choice?

Lagos will not be the first city that will be referred to as a no man’s land. I remember there’s an area in Kaduna that’s called ‘No man’s land’.

Heaven has not fallen, has it?

I don’t think we should be dwelling on all these issues if we are serious about building a virile country. It’s better to correct those things we believe are wrong because two wrongs can never make a right!

The warring parties should be aware that some people are just fanning the embers of disunity to favor themselves. They should also be aware that those people and their own children would be detached from whatever problems they face as a result.

I repeat, two wrongs don’t make a RIGHT!
