As the latest round of pledges for Syria is going South, main donors are saying that the conditions for a safe return are not yet met despite pressure from host countries.

The National reports that at the annual conference for Syria in Brussels, the latest round of pledges represented a 22 percent decrease compared to last year.

The sum of 8.1 billion dollars was considered a disappointment by humanitarian workers as tĥe situation for Syrian refugees continues to worsen.

The funds will support basic services delivered by international organizations to Syrians both in Syria and in neighbouring countries.

Donors include the EU Commission, its member states, and a number of other countries like Qatar, Iceland and Japan.
