It was a long day in Nigeria as the main labour unions—the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress—began a nationwide strike on Monday. They effectively shut down the beleaguered nation, sealing the national grid and disrupting strikes because they could not negotiate a new minimum wage with the government.
The Unions are asking for a minimum wage of 494,000 naira a month, while the Government is offering 60,000 naira. the unions also demand the reversal of an electricity tariff hike effected in April for better-off consumers who use the most power. Meanwhile, the government is trying to wean te economy off its shoulders.
