The two central labour unions in Nigeria are demanding a minimum wage of of fifty six thousand naira.
Brilliant, isn’t it?
When we look at the profligacy of the ruling class, the working class deserves much more. A faction is even asking for ninety thousand naira.
Yes, labour deserves the key to the central bank!
Money civilises a people. Before the Udoji awards in the seventies, Nigerians did not know how to secure their houses with various impediments to prevent robberies.
We were completely innocent. Money was then money! It had value in those good old days. However, once the increments were paid, our shut eyes became open.
So did the eyes of armed robbers. They just couldn’t be caught napping. They felt they should have their own increments too. At our expense, of course!
Traders, landlords, commercial drivers and others soon followed suit.
It has thus become a vicious circle. With every salary incease, inflation brings its elder brother, hyperinflation.
So, it is not a surprise for the workers to ask for more pay.
All the states are conveniently paying the present eighteen thousand naira minimum wage.
Workers have never had it so good. Nigeria enjoys twenty four hours of power supply. There is potable water in every home. Heath services are free for workers.
In fact, every child is enjoying scholarship from primary to the university level. Food is so cheap that neighbouring countries come to buy food from Nigeria. Thanks to the various farm estates that government and NGOs have established.
And what’s more! Nobody is looking for job in Nigeria. Everybody is gainfully employed.
Let’s have the new increments.
Aluta continua!!!
