When people describe Nigeria as the poverty capital of the world, it’s not really a new thing. That’s because the Yoruba have a saying that , when a single person is rich in the community, then the whole community is poor.
What’s going on in Nigeria now can be termed as a liberation of the communal wealth which some people had hijacked for their own selfish interests.
So, they thought the people were happy with them. Did they think the masses were okay with being their yes men till eternity? They were not even satisfied with enslaving the people to themselves. They often plan to position their own scions over the people.
However, I believe intellectual poverty is even worse. If the ruling class wasn’t intellectually poor, they would have seen that our people don’t need a lot.
Indeed, nobody is asking for a Messiah.
The masses are only asking for basic amenities, security and jobs. If the gluttonous clique had done that, they could have gone to bed with both eyes closed. But they were fooled with the modestly of the talakawa who had no choice but to be looking unto them for crumbs.
But now, they are too late in discovering they have murdered sleep!
To make matters worse, the government is headed by an insensitive personality. If he had been proactive, he wouldn’t have been comparing his own government to others. He could have ‘beaten his swords into ploughshares’. But rather than doing that, he was busy warning the people.
And the legislative houses are no better.
I would think the best bet is to be recalling the so called legislators who are representing themselves and not their communities.
