Our Humanity! – Adewale Sobowale

COVID 19 could be spreading all over the globe. But there’s no doubting the fact that it has exposed the various aspects of people, all over the world, laying claims to being human.

When I was a tot, we, more or less, lived a communal life. And that was in Lagos of the mid sixties. When we came back from school, we ate together. I can still remember a bag of gari that was in the corridor. It was for all comers.

It’s for this reason I just can’t help appreciating the various governments, organizations and individuals who have been sane enough to maintain their humanism.

I used the word, ‘sane’, advisedly. Any keen observer of our world would see so many things which should not be happening among humans are now happening. But we seem to have had a little respite since COVID 19 promoted itself from an isolated case in a remote village of China to a pandemic

But then, when we’re crying, of course, we won’t lose our sense of sight. The business people, governments and even individuals among us should not use the case for their own selfish interests. While I agree that everyone is selfish, I still believe we could do with some selflessness in this matter.

It’s not good enough to donate to a good cause while treating the people around us shabbily. I think all businesses ought to give their workers some palliatives which doesn’t necessarily have to be monetary.

Any government who is owing workers salaries and tells them to work from home is making an obvious mockery of itself .

We, the people, should not only share what we have with each other at these austere times but we should do it sincerely. I’m sure the wise would understand me.

I hear one or two governors are showing they are up to the task in Nigeria. While they’re obviously not doing it with their personal funds, we should praise them for doing what has become a, ‘Mission Impossible.’

Being proactive has long ago become a Mission Impossible as far as Nigerian governments are concerned!

Omoluabi ni won!!

By the way, we should congratulate the Nigerian national assembly members for taking delivery of their brand new vehicles!!
